3D Juggling 669: Keep the Ball in the Middle

Next week we will be announcing the arrival of our newest 3D team member. Meanwhile…

Claire writes: “When people won’t take responsibility at work, a problem becomes like an unexploded bomb that gets thrown around the organisation with a clock ticking until it explodes. The person holding it then gets the blame, or the sack. or something – while others step back and comment that it was always going to happen.

What we can learn from coaching is to keep responsibility in the middle and share it appropriately. We take a large 60cm Gym Ball (Birthing ball to those of you in midwifery) on much of our training. Too often in conversations, the ball of responsibility gets thrown at one person or picked up by another. If you’re holding a 60cm ball you can’t even see the person you are talking to. In coaching, responsibility needs to be in the middle always. In other conversations, being clear about what’s yours, what’s theirs and what’s shared can transform what you’re doing.
