3D Juggling 600: Pace

The next Action Learning Set Facilitator Training will be in Nottingham on 28th March.  Are you able to join us?  We had a great group at the first Coaching Masterclass.  The next one will be 25th February at 5pm UK time on creating awareness.

Claire writes: “If you have ever worked in any of the caring professions or the church, you are probably hard wired to match body language and tone to create good rapport with the people with whom you work.  It’s a core skill.  And when people come and share problems or dilemmas at work, that’s how many of us respond.  We sit down quietly and listen.

Matching pace and tone is a great way of building rapport.  But if we want to help them to move forward, we need to mismatch pace or tone to move towards change and action.  Sometimes we do it intuitively.  And sometimes we wonder why a conversation stayed in supportiveness.  Try moving in your chair, leaning forward or slightly speeding up your words.  And see what happens.

In their book Challenging Coaching, John Blakey and Ian Day talk about the spectrum of supportiveness and challenge.  High support low challenge is cosy and it is easy to get stuck there.  High support and high challenge is what begins to move towards change.  But make sure it’s supportive before it is challenging or, as they describe, it shifts to high stress!”
