3D Ideas 978: What’s the Focus

Claire writes: “Continuing last week’s theme of theatre, do you watch the star of the play? Or can you multitask and watch the whole cast? We were watching the Hamilton film over Christmas, and I found myself focussing on one of the extras and watching where she’d turn up next.

An awful lot of time in work conversations is spent talking about different people. In coaching, the only person that the person with us has control over is who they are and how they do what they do in relation to everyone else. We explore together so that they understand and see something differently – not so that I understand. If the conversation is going to be useful, it needs to focus on the star of the play – the thinker – and not on the cast. The coaching principle is to not talk to the cast or the problem – which I call the wavy people. We need to talk to the person.  How they do what they do is what’s in their gift. And it’s that focus that makes these kinds of conversations transformational.”
