Claire writes: “Dad and I went for a back-stage theatre tour as a Christmas present. It was great fun with lots of learning. Back stage is functional more than beautiful. It has what it needs to have and does what it needs to do. Nothing extra. That’s what we need behind our conversations, I think – enough and not too much – and it doesn’t need to be fancy!
The man who runs the place happened to be on the stage and showed us where they keep ‘the book’ for prompting. Even the most experienced actors get stage fright, we were told. And when they do, they don’t even know what play they are in – let alone what line they should be speaking. So freezing in conversations, and forgetting questions must be OK! The art in coaching is that instead of apologising and summarising to find ourselves, we can use the thinker as the prompt. ‘Where are we? What do we need to do now?’ is a great start. ”
