Claire writes: “Every time we get to the second practice in our coaching training – Transforming Conversations (Building a Coaching Culture), we hear people working very hard trying not to advise. This sounds messy and causes plenty of confusion. It often starts ‘Have you thought about…’ or a jumble of words when someone is trying so very hard to be the coach.
Keep it clean and offer – by standing in a different pair of shoes. That might sound like: ‘If I was a recruiter, I wonder if I’d be thinking x,y,z’. Hybrid conversations are OK. Not everyone needs pure coaching. However, only change hats or change shoes if you have checked in, if it serves the thinker – and never in a recording for an ICF exam!
Here’s an example of how a manager might use coaching skills, that came as an answer in a course last week.”
