Claire writes: “Most listening books talk about the value of mirroring – reflecting back what people told you. Too much of that can end up slowing down the conversation and it can look like you’re going to do something with what they are saying… whereas coaching is about facilitating them to do something with it. And that’s our eternal challenge – that this thing we do is so similar to other 1-1 practise.. And yet so different.
When they share data with you, it’s stuff they won’t forget: ‘I’ve been here 5 years’, ‘Covid’, ‘half the team has been self-isolating’, ‘we are all working from home’…
When you’re reflecting back, instead of telling them stuff they know, offer them things they don’t know – with a question mark. That might sound like “…a lot’s going on?” or “challenging?”
You’ll be amazed at how much that begins to enable people to move forward in their thinking.”
