3D Ideas 1173 – Are you an experienced leader feeling tired?

Su writes, “There are seasons for leaders! I notice that there is a really helpful focus on development for aspiring leaders, and early leaders. It’s a great time for development and growth as new situations and opportunities arise, new challenges are always requiring creative responses and there can be a beautiful sense of the blank sheet of paper, or the uncharted waters. This also can be a time for anxiety and concern.

And as years roll by, the fun of the new might be replaced by some familiarity, comfort or indeed complacence. New challenges brought on by changes in the environment or market will always arrive, but there may be a familiar sense of knowing how to deal with these, and a worn track of thinking and acting. For leaders in some of the worlds we work in, there is also a tiredness brought on by the unrelenting pressure from the context: here we go again – this time with fewer resources and shorter timelines. I notice that for some people this also brings some guilt or disquiet too: have I fallen out of love with doing this work? Am I going through the motions and not really feeling as passionate as I did?

If you’re a leader who has got to the point of wondering what’s next, or feeling tired by the pressures, coaching might be just the thing for you to explore what is going on for you, now. It might be the right time to investigate the background, nagging concerns in a safe place. The outcome might be looking at what new things could re-invigorate you – whether that’s in this role or a new one. Or it might be that just thinking it through will bring some peace in this current season. “
