Claire writes: “This year, blue tits nested in our bird box. This was a big thing for us. We have owned the bird box for several years, and this is the first time it has been occupied. I can’t describe the joy we have experienced watching the parents flying in and out. In the early weeks, they were taking materials to build the next. And then food for the babies. The week the babies fledged was thrilling. We could see them peeping their heads through the hole. And then one by one they flew out.

My husband had done research and discovered that they would leave the day they fledged and never return. I cannot understate the responsibility I felt that they would all leave our garden safe and well. When one didn’t make it, it was sad. But that wasn’t my responsibility. We had done what was needed by providing a safe space for them to be. I notice that with human people, we can overreach what is our responsibility, too.”
