Su writes, “This week, I had a “chat” appointment with someone curious about how coaching might help them. Such requests come to us a lot, as people seek coaching for various reasons and have different levels of understanding about what it really is. We find a 15-minute chat is an effective way to determine if coaching is the right approach for them without taking too much time.
The person arrived feeling frustrated and anxious, reading a list of goals with very little engagement and connection. I asked, “What do you want to be different?” and then after asking again, he dropped the list and said, “I just want to know what needs to change and then how to change it.”
This marked a significant shift. By discarding a list that wasn’t truly his, he began to identify his real desires. That’s what we’ll focus on in our sessions.
If you’re unsure if coaching is right for you, we can discuss it together. We describe coaching as partnering in your thinking—could that be helpful for you? And you don’t need to bring a list unless that works for you!”
