Su writes: “Over many years in training environments I have noticed a values-based response that I have, which I feel very deeply, when delegates don’t turn up or are not fully engaged with the work we are doing. On zoom that can be very obvious! At 3D Coaching we are very clear that our delegates are not just gaining from their own individual learning, but are part of a learning system, so they impact others’ learning too.
It’s a perspective thing isn’t it? From my perspective and my values, I see the entire learning community and feel hurt (strong word!) for others when a delegate doesn’t turn up or is not fully present. It feels like a rejection! However the delegate has a different perspective of course: for them they may be very conscious that they (or the organisation) has paid for this for them, and that they are seeing from the perspective of their individual objectives: it may be less about how they contribute to and impact the group’s learning.
So my learning? Recognising that we are looking from different perspectives at the same thing and so seeing different things. Being open to seeing their perspective, noticing where my value-judgements rise up unhelpfully and enabling a good learning space where everyone contributes and learns. Including me.”
