Su writes: “When I coach people around interviews, how to turn up fully and tell the good stories that help selection panels to access the data they need, I notice that there’s often a very key piece of information that gets missed which is about “what did I do?”. For some people (this might be you!) there’s loads of other details you’re happy to talk about: the context, the numbers, the outcome… And though these things contain some data that’s useful for the panel, these are the facts that won’t be travelling with you to the next role! What do you bring with you? It’s how you do what you do!
When I feed this back, sometimes I’m met with surprise that the panel would be interested in this: recently someone responded “but surely everybody does what I do?” They were talking about spending time listening to people’s needs – and we all know that that isn’t what everybody does! But as it’s in this person’s DNA, she does it without even noticing it’s a thing.
How you do what you do is different from how someone else does what they do. For the panel to discern whether you will fit or disrupt the culture (either might be useful) they need data about how you do what you do. I notice that sometimes people aren’t really clear about how they do what they do – and so a good robust coaching session which helps you see that stuff can be an absolute game-changer. If you see you more clearly, you’ll help the interview panel see you more clearly too. ”
