Claire writes: “One of the things I love most about the Christmas holidays is that there can be days when I only have one thing to do. Multitasking at work can be exhausting as well as energising!
Even for the most accomplished multitasker, there are some things that are difficult to do at the same time. It is very difficult to think creatively while you are also trying to let off steam. Nancy Kline says that while people are experiencing high levels of emotion, they can’t think. Sometimes in conversations the most generous thing we can do for a contained amount of time (ask them how long) is to invite someone to rant. I call it a ranting bucket – we honour the rant. After that we can work out together what is the work we need to do today because we have cleared the space they needed to be able to think.”
