While Claire is on sabbatical, we will be hearing from a guest blogger each week. This week’s guest blogger is former Science teacher and coach Deborah Ross. Deborah writes: “I had my first session of Action Learning Set Facilitator Training yesterday which was fab. Whilst watching your YouTube clip as part of the preparation, I had a new insight! You were talking about the coaching container and the chemical reaction taking place, and I realised that coaching is a catalyst. A catalyst is a substance added to a chemical reaction which allows it to take place at a faster rate or under different conditions (which are usually more favourable eg lower temperature). A catalyst is not one of the reactants (ingredients) and it does not form part of the products either and so at the end of the reaction, the catalyst remains distinct and ready to use again. Another definition of a catalyst that I found was “an agent that provokes or speeds significant change or action.”
I thought that was a helpful idea and I was talking to a friend the other day about coaching and used to help explain a little about the coaching process. She has a chemistry background and it seemed to help understand the distinctiveness of coaching a little more.”
