3D Coaching’s Su Blanch writes: “Out on a walk, and I was struck by the difference between perceptions of truth. Here are two versions of the truth. The land owner states clearly their version of the truth. And the dog walkers who would like to get from one field to another have theirs!
Of course this happens in conversations too. “I am definitely not worried about doing this thing” our thinker tells us bravely. And yet we might have some other evidence which tells a different truth. What is spoken provides one lens, but as a robust coach, we have other data at our disposal too. What do we notice in the moment, when they give that absolute statement? The slight shifting in their seat? Their eye contact dropping momentarily? Their voice raising a tone or two? A feeling that something ….isn’t quite…. Right?
The ICF Competency frameworks encourages us to Evoke Awareness by: Sharing observations, insights and feelings, without attachment, that have the potential to create new learning for the client
Give them the data that you’ve noticed. Perhaps their conviction is true. Maybe it’s not completely true. WIth the two versions of truth next to each other, they might figure out for themselves something new.
And if the land owner still recognises that there’s no footpath here, they’ve made their choice with all the available evidence!”
