Claire writes: “In my new garden habit, I somehow managed to pot up and plant out the sweet peas. And what a job that’s been. They are delicate… I have great hopes for weeks of summer flowers.

I just read this quote from Charles Brower which is the equivalent of sweet pea treatment for conversations: “A new idea is delicate. It can be killed by a sneer or a yawn; it can be stabbed to death by a quip and worried to death by a frown on the right man’s brow.”

It’s true in conversations. When our thinking face looks angry, and we are early on in a new coaching relationship, a new idea may emerge and disappear because the thinker feels that we disapprove. It’s useful to get feedback (which is why mentor coaching is useful) on the faces and sounds with which you demonstrate that you are paying attention. It doesn’t always look or sound the same as we might imagine!”
