How to Make Great Appointments

  • Do you want your interviewers to be confident and competent to enable you to select wisely by combining discernment and decision making?
  • Do you want to better manage the appointments process in local churches?

Managing a process which includes discernment and selection can be a challenge.  A good challenge. You are looking for the candidate who is called, competent enough and has the right chemistry to work with colleagues.

How to Make Great Appointments is designed with you to meet the needs of your particular context and your process and will draw on the results of a survey conducted by 3D in 2011.

Whether you are selecting candidates or bishops, by the end of the day, you will:

  • Have a better understand what makes a good process – for the panel and the candidates
  • Be asking simple and incisive questions which will give you useful information that connect with the person profile
  • Know how to write the kind of report which will feed back into your organisation’s process where that is needed
  • Be more confident about giving feedback

Training with 3D is experiential, with appropriate input and theory – and is also fun.

“Claire brings her wide experience of the interview/selection process as both interviewer and coach to candidates to help guide people’s thinking and expectations.  She leads her training with insight and humour and is also effective at challenging and keeping things on course where necessary. “ Mark Wigglesworth, Diocese of Sheffield

“Thanks very much for the Interview Training Day. It was really valuable not only to me personally but also to all who attended it.  We certainly came away with tools, useful information, inspiration and food for thought. Thank you for your expertise and insights.”

“Many thanks for the day last week.  I thought it was excellent and one of the best we have done together as a staff.  You delivered exactly what I hoped for and there was a great deal of energy in the room. I would be glad to commend this particular training package to others” Bishop Steven Croft, Diocese of Sheffield

We have many years’ experience as selection interviewers and trainers in church organisations .  We have worked with the Church of England, the Methodist Church – World Church Office and Ministry Office, and  USPG.  And we have written ‘How to Make Great Appointments in the Church’

“I enjoyed reading How To Make Great Appointments in the Church. It’s a very practical and focused book.I found the overview of the appointment process used in different streams of the church very interesting. ‘Calling, competence and chemistry’ (which I later realised was the subtitle of the whole book) struck me as a very helpful summary of what matters in such an appointment. One of the most useful parts for me was the section with practical ideas for dealing positively with  enquiries and lobbying. The chapter on prayer was both unexpected and excellent. Quite a bit of the content as the book progressed seemed especially relevant in an Anglican context, but I got plenty of good insights from it”

Martin Hodson, Baptist Minister

“Thank you for coming on Saturday, and for leading such a stimulating workshop.  I feel we have tons of material to pick up and use, and I certainly feel challenged to make sure that the follow up happens!  It was encouraging to see such a diverse group gathered. You and Su worked well together; please pass our thanks on to her as well.”

Lauryn Awbrey, Reader Ministry Officer, Diocese of St Albans
