Claire writes: ‘A couple of conversations this week have got me thinking about how much contact we keep with people we work with – between sessions.  An important belief in coaching is that the people we work with are robust enough to deal with their own stuff.  What does it mean to demonstrate that between sessions, and in the words of TS Eliot ‘to care and not to care’

This got me thinking about gestures generally,- and I know that this is going to be useful in my whole life, not just my work.  Different gestures require different levels of engagement from the receiver.  There are times when what’s important is to express care and not expect an engagement.  That’s a great time to send a Thinking of you card or flowers.  And sometimes it’s the time to send them without a name.

When I email, text or What’s App, there can be more pressure to engage, even if I write NNTR (no need to reply).

So, coming out of this week, I’ll be asking myself what a gesture is for – and therefore how big or small it needs to be.
